B.C. weather: Heat warnings continue for Southern Interior

British Columbia continues to experience extreme heat as heat warnings remain in effect for the interior of the province.

According to Environment Canada, temperatures are expected to reach up to 40 degrees Celsius in some areas, with overnight lows remaining in the high teens.

The heat warnings, which were first issued on Friday, have been extended through the weekend and into Monday for regions including the Okanagan, Fraser Canyon, and Nicola.

Residents are advised to take precautions to protect themselves from the heat, including staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, and checking on vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and young children.

The hot and dry conditions have also increased the risk of wildfires in the province. As of Saturday, there were 136 active wildfires burning in BC, with 12 of them considered to be of note.

The BC Wildfire Service has implemented a campfire ban in the Kamloops Fire Centre, and officials are urging the public to be cautious and responsible when using fire in any capacity.

The extreme heat has also caused concerns for farmers and agricultural producers in the province. The BC Ministry of Agriculture has issued a statement advising farmers to take precautions to protect their crops and livestock from the heat.

The heat wave is expected to continue into next week, with temperatures remaining well above seasonal averages. Environment Canada is reminding residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this extreme weather event.
