2 in hospital after apartment fire in northeast Edmonton: EFRS

Two individuals have been hospitalized after a fire broke out in an apartment building in northeast Edmonton, according to the Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS).

The fire occurred on Sunday evening at an apartment complex on 118 Avenue and 50 Street. EFRS received multiple calls reporting the blaze at around 7:30 p.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from a suite on the third floor of the building. Crews quickly worked to evacuate the building and contain the fire.

Two individuals were rescued from the suite where the fire originated and were transported to the hospital for treatment. Their current condition is unknown.

The fire was brought under control within an hour, but not before causing significant damage to the suite and smoke damage to other units in the building.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but EFRS has confirmed that it started in the kitchen of the suite where the two individuals were rescued.

Residents of the building were temporarily displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross.

The EFRS is reminding the public to always have working smoke alarms in their homes and to have a fire escape plan in case of emergencies.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety and the bravery of our firefighters who put their lives on the line to protect our community.
