Empire expands partnership with anti-food waste app FoodHero beyond Quebec

Empire, one of Canada’s leading food retailers, has announced an expansion of their partnership with the anti-food waste app, FoodHero. This partnership will extend beyond Quebec, where it was initially launched, to other provinces across the country.

FoodHero is a mobile application that connects consumers with discounted food items that are close to their expiration date. This not only helps customers save money, but also reduces food waste by diverting these items from landfills.

The partnership between Empire and FoodHero began in 2019, with a pilot program in Quebec. It was met with great success, with over 200,000 users downloading the app and over 1 million pounds of food being rescued from waste. This positive response has prompted Empire to expand the partnership to other regions, including Ontario, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick.

Empire’s Executive Vice President of Operations, Mike Venton, expressed his excitement about the expansion, stating, “We are proud to continue our partnership with FoodHero and bring this innovative solution to more communities across Canada. This aligns with our commitment to reducing food waste and providing affordable options for our customers.”

FoodHero’s CEO, Jonathan Defoy, also shared his enthusiasm for the partnership, saying, “We are thrilled to work with Empire to expand our reach and make a positive impact on food waste in Canada. Together, we can make a difference and create a more sustainable food system.”

This expansion of the partnership between Empire and FoodHero is a step towards a more sustainable future for the Canadian food industry. It not only benefits consumers by providing affordable options, but also contributes to reducing food waste and its environmental impact.

With this partnership, Empire and FoodHero are setting an example for other retailers to follow and showing that small changes can make a big difference in creating a more sustainable world.
