Attempted murder charge laid in violent, random assault on Jasper Avenue: police

A man has been charged with attempted murder after a violent and seemingly random assault on Jasper Avenue in Edmonton.

According to police, the incident occurred on the evening of February 10th, when a 29-year-old man was walking along Jasper Avenue near 109 Street. The victim was approached by a 25-year-old man who allegedly began attacking him without provocation.

The victim sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. He is currently in stable condition.

The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Michael James, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with attempted murder, assault causing bodily harm, and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

Police have not disclosed the weapon used in the attack, but have confirmed that it was recovered at the scene.

The motive for the attack is still under investigation, but police have stated that there is no known connection between the victim and the suspect.

This incident has raised concerns about safety in the downtown area, with many residents expressing shock and fear over the seemingly random nature of the attack.

In response, Edmonton Police Chief Dale McFee has assured the public that the downtown area is safe and that incidents like this are rare. He also urged anyone who witnesses a crime to report it immediately.
