Wildfires prompt evacuation of First Nation reserve near Spences Bridge, B.C.

A raging wildfire has forced the evacuation of a First Nation reserve near Spences Bridge, British Columbia.

The blaze, which started on Wednesday, has quickly spread and is now threatening the safety of the community of Kanaka Bar. The reserve, located about 20 kilometers south of Spences Bridge, is home to approximately 200 people.

According to the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, the evacuation order was issued on Thursday evening due to the fire’s rapid growth and potential danger to residents. The order affects all homes and properties within the reserve’s boundaries.

The BC Wildfire Service has classified the fire as “out of control” and estimates it to be around 100 hectares in size. Firefighters are currently battling the blaze with the help of air tankers and helicopters.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is believed to have been sparked by lightning strikes in the area.

The evacuation order has been met with mixed emotions from the residents of Kanaka Bar. While some have expressed fear and concern for their homes and belongings, others have chosen to stay behind and protect their community.

Chief Patrick Michell of the Kanaka Bar Indian Band has urged residents to follow the evacuation order and seek shelter at the designated emergency reception center in Lytton.

“We are taking this situation very seriously and are working closely with the BC Wildfire Service and other agencies to ensure the safety of our community,” Chief Michell said in a statement.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District has also issued an evacuation alert for the nearby community of Spences Bridge, warning residents to be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice.

As of now, there have been no reports of injuries or damage to structures. However, the fire is still active and continues to pose a threat to the area.

Residents are advised to stay updated on the situation and follow the instructions of local authorities. The BC Wildfire Service has also reminded the public to be cautious and vigilant during this time of heightened fire risk.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available. Our thoughts are with the residents of Kanaka Bar and all those affected by this devastating wildfire.
