Toronto Councillor Proposes “Taylor Swift Way” for Downtown Route During Singer’s “Era’s Tour”
A Toronto city councillor is pushing for a downtown route to be temporarily renamed as “Taylor Swift Way” during the singer’s upcoming “Era’s Tour” stop in the city.
Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam has put forward a motion to designate a portion of Bremner Boulevard, between Spadina Avenue and York Street, as “Taylor Swift Way” from August 3rd to 5th. This would coincide with Swift’s two sold-out shows at the Rogers Centre on August 3rd and 4th.
Wong-Tam says the proposal is a way to celebrate Swift’s impact on the music industry and her connection to the city of Toronto. The singer has a history of performing in the city, with her last concert in Toronto being in 2018 for her “Reputation Stadium Tour.”
The councillor also notes that the temporary renaming would provide a boost to the local economy, as Swift’s concerts are expected to bring in thousands of fans to the downtown area.
The motion will be discussed at the next city council meeting on July 16th. If approved, the temporary renaming would require a street sign to be installed and a permit to be issued by the city.
This is not the first time a Toronto street has been temporarily renamed for a celebrity. In 2018, a portion of King Street was designated as “Raptors Way” during the Toronto Raptors’ playoff run.
Fans of Taylor Swift have taken to social media to express their excitement and support for the proposed “Taylor Swift Way.” Many are hoping that the motion will be approved and are already planning to take photos with the street sign during the concerts.
The “Era’s Tour” is in support of Swift’s latest album, “Lover,” which was released in August 2019. The tour has received critical acclaim and has been praised for its elaborate production and energetic performances.
If the motion is approved, Toronto will join other cities such as New York, Nashville, and London, which have also designated streets in honor of the singer during her tours.
As the city eagerly awaits the decision on the proposed “Taylor Swift Way,” fans and residents alike can look forward to a potential celebration of the singer’s music and impact on the city of Toronto.
