A popular ready-to-eat meatball dish has been recalled due to potential contamination with listeria, a harmful bacteria that can cause serious illness.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued the recall for Wecook brand “Meatball with Tomato Sauce” on Tuesday, after a routine inspection found possible traces of listeria in the product.
The affected product, which is sold in 300-gram packages, has a best before date of April 24, 2021 and the UPC code 6 287210 001106. It was distributed in Ontario and Quebec.
Listeria can cause symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, and muscle aches, and can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
So far, there have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product. However, the CFIA is urging consumers who have purchased the affected product to either throw it away or return it to the store where it was purchased.
Food contaminated with listeria may not look or smell spoiled, so it is important for consumers to check the best before date and UPC code on their products to determine if they are affected by the recall.
The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation and is working with the company to ensure that all affected products are removed from the market.
Consumers who have questions or concerns about the recall can contact Wecook at 1-514-277-7737 or by email at info@wecook.ca.
It is important for consumers to always follow food safety guidelines and to check for any recalls or warnings before consuming a product. The CFIA regularly conducts inspections and issues recalls to ensure the safety of Canadian consumers.
