Tragedy struck the province of Alberta as a firefighter lost his life while battling a wildfire in Jasper National Park.
The fallen firefighter, identified as Marc-André Perras, was a member of the Hinton Fire Department. He was part of a team responding to a wildfire that broke out near the town of Jasper on July 31.
According to a statement from the Hinton Fire Department, Perras was working on the fire line when he suddenly collapsed. Despite immediate medical attention from his colleagues, he was unable to be revived.
Perras, 30, had been a firefighter for 10 years and was described as a dedicated and passionate member of the department. He leaves behind his wife and two young children.
The cause of Perras’ death is still under investigation, but it is believed to be related to the extreme heat and physical exertion of fighting the wildfire.
The wildfire, which has been named the Malignant Creek wildfire, has been burning since July 30 and has grown to over 1,000 hectares in size. It is currently being managed by Parks Canada and is not considered a threat to any nearby communities.
In a statement, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney expressed his condolences to Perras’ family and colleagues, saying, “Alberta has lost a hero who put his life on the line to protect others. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”
The Hinton Fire Department has also set up a memorial fund for Perras’ family, and donations can be made through the department’s website.
Perras’ death serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers that firefighters face while protecting our communities. As the wildfire season continues, it is important to remember and honor the sacrifices made by these brave individuals.
