Toronto Blue Jays’ third baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. extended his hit streak to 14 games, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win against the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night.
Despite Guerrero’s impressive performance, the Blue Jays fell 1-0 to the Athletics in a close game at the Rogers Centre.
The 22-year-old slugger has been on a hot streak, hitting .373 with six home runs and 14 RBIs in his last 14 games. His consistency at the plate has been a major factor in the Blue Jays’ recent success.
However, the Athletics’ pitching staff proved to be a tough challenge for the Blue Jays’ offense. Oakland’s starter, Sean Manaea, held the Blue Jays to just three hits over seven innings, striking out eight batters.
On the other side, Blue Jays’ starter Hyun Jin Ryu also had a strong outing, allowing just one run on five hits over six innings. But the lack of run support from his team ultimately led to the loss.
The lone run of the game came in the fourth inning when Athletics’ first baseman Matt Olson hit a solo home run off of Ryu.
Despite the loss, the Blue Jays remain in the hunt for a playoff spot, currently sitting in fourth place in the American League East with a record of 45-42.
The team will look to bounce back in the second game of the series against the Athletics on Wednesday night. Blue Jays’ ace, Robbie Ray, will take the mound and look to continue his dominant season, currently boasting a 7-4 record with a 3.13 ERA.
The Blue Jays will need to find a way to break through the Athletics’ strong pitching if they want to secure a win and continue their push for a playoff spot.
