Tropical storm Debby remnants brings record rainfall to Montreal, Eastern Canada

Montreal and other parts of eastern Canada were hit with record-breaking rainfall as the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby passed through the region.

According to Environment Canada, Montreal received a total of 100 millimeters of rain on Tuesday, breaking the previous record of 68.8 millimeters set in 1983. Other areas in Quebec, such as Sherbrooke and Drummondville, also saw significant amounts of rain, with 80 millimeters and 70 millimeters respectively.

The heavy rainfall caused flash flooding in some areas, leading to road closures and power outages. The city of Montreal issued a warning for residents to avoid driving through flooded areas and to stay away from rivers and streams.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Debby also brought strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 70 kilometers per hour in some areas. This caused damage to trees and power lines, resulting in over 20,000 Hydro-Quebec customers losing power at the height of the storm.

The storm also affected other parts of eastern Canada, with New Brunswick and Nova Scotia experiencing heavy rainfall and strong winds. In New Brunswick, over 50 millimeters of rain fell in some areas, while Nova Scotia saw wind gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour.

The Canadian Hurricane Centre issued a statement warning of the potential for localized flooding and strong winds as the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby continue to move through the region.

While the storm has now passed, the effects are still being felt. The city of Montreal is working to clean up debris and repair any damage caused by the storm. Residents are advised to continue to exercise caution and to report any damage to their property.

This record-breaking rainfall serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather and the importance of being prepared for severe storms. As always, it is recommended to stay informed and follow any warnings or advisories issued by local authorities.
