After being closed for nearly a year due to a wildfire in Jasper National Park, Miette Hot Springs is finally set to reopen to the public.
The popular tourist destination, located about 60 kilometers east of Jasper, was forced to shut down in July 2020 when the nearby wildfire threatened the safety of visitors and staff.
According to Parks Canada, the fire was caused by a lightning strike and burned over 21,000 hectares of land, including a portion of the Miette Hot Springs area.
After months of extensive cleanup and repairs, the hot springs are now ready to welcome back visitors. The reopening date has been set for July 1, just in time for the Canada Day long weekend.
Visitors can expect to see some changes when they arrive at the hot springs. In order to comply with COVID-19 safety protocols, capacity will be limited and reservations will be required. The hot springs will also be implementing enhanced cleaning and sanitization measures to ensure the safety of all guests.
In addition, the Miette Hot Springs pool will now be heated using a new, more energy-efficient system. This change is part of Parks Canada’s commitment to reducing their carbon footprint and promoting sustainable practices.
The reopening of Miette Hot Springs is not only exciting for tourists, but also for the local economy. The hot springs are a major source of revenue for the surrounding communities, and their closure had a significant impact on businesses in the area.
Parks Canada is reminding visitors to respect the natural environment and follow all safety guidelines while enjoying the hot springs. This includes staying on designated trails, properly disposing of waste, and being aware of potential wildlife encounters.
As we continue to navigate the challenges of the pandemic, the reopening of Miette Hot Springs serves as a reminder of the resiliency and determination of our communities. So mark your calendars and get ready to relax and rejuvenate in the beautiful Miette Hot Springs once again.
