A First Nation community in British Columbia is rising from the ashes after a devastating fire destroyed their village. The Lower Similkameen Indian Band’s (LSIB) community of Chopaka was left in ruins after a wildfire swept through the area in 2017. But now, the community is rebuilding and coming back stronger than ever.
The LSIB has been working tirelessly to rebuild their community, with the help of government funding and support from neighboring First Nations. The new village will be called “Snpinktn” which means “place of the beaver” in the traditional language of the LSIB.
Chief Keith Crow of the LSIB expressed his gratitude for the support they have received, stating, “We are grateful for the outpouring of support from our neighboring First Nations and the government. It has been a long and difficult journey, but we are determined to rebuild and create a better future for our community.”
The new village will feature 18 new homes, a community center, and a new water system. The homes will be built to withstand wildfires, with fire-resistant materials and landscaping. The community center will serve as a gathering place for the LSIB and will also house a daycare and a health center.
The LSIB has also taken this opportunity to incorporate sustainable and eco-friendly practices into their rebuilding efforts. The new water system will use solar power, and the homes will be equipped with energy-efficient appliances.
The community is also working to preserve their cultural heritage by incorporating traditional elements into the design of the new village. The community center will feature a traditional pit house, and the homes will have traditional artwork and designs.
The LSIB’s determination to rebuild and create a better future for their community is truly inspiring. Their resilience and commitment to preserving their culture and incorporating sustainable practices into their rebuilding efforts is a testament to their strength and determination.
The new village of Snpinktn is set to be completed by the end of 2021, and the LSIB is looking forward to welcoming back their community members and creating a brighter future for generations to come.
