A Calgary man is facing charges after allegedly committing wine fraud, according to authorities.
The accused, identified as 53-year-old John Smith, has been charged with fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.
The investigation began in January 2021 when a local wine collector reported purchasing a rare bottle of wine from Smith for $10,000. However, upon further examination, the collector discovered that the bottle was a fake.
Further investigation revealed that Smith had been selling counterfeit wine to multiple buyers, resulting in losses of over $100,000.
According to police, Smith had been purchasing inexpensive wine and altering the labels to make them appear as rare and expensive bottles. He then sold them at a significantly higher price, deceiving buyers into thinking they were purchasing authentic and valuable wine.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have purchased wine from Smith to come forward and contact the police.
This case serves as a reminder for consumers to be cautious when purchasing high-end items, especially from individuals or sources that are not reputable.
Smith is scheduled to appear in court on June 15, 2021. If convicted, he could face serious consequences including fines and imprisonment.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are asking anyone with information to contact them.
