Canada has pledged to provide $5.7 million in humanitarian aid to Ukraine, with a specific focus on children. The announcement was made by Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau on Tuesday.
The aid will be directed towards supporting the most vulnerable populations in Ukraine, including children who have been affected by the ongoing conflict in the country. This includes providing access to education, healthcare, and psychosocial support.
According to Garneau, the funding will also go towards addressing the urgent needs of internally displaced persons and refugees in Ukraine. This includes providing shelter, food, and other essential items.
Canada’s commitment to supporting Ukraine is part of its ongoing efforts to promote peace and stability in the region. The country has been a strong supporter of Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict in 2014, providing over $785 million in assistance to date.
In addition to the humanitarian aid, Canada has also been actively involved in diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict. This includes participating in the Normandy Format and the Trilateral Contact Group, as well as providing support for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine.
Garneau emphasized that Canada’s support for Ukraine is based on the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the right to self-determination. He also expressed concern over the recent increase in ceasefire violations and called for all parties to respect the Minsk agreements.
The announcement of this humanitarian aid comes at a critical time, as the conflict in Ukraine continues to have a devastating impact on the lives of civilians, especially children. Canada’s commitment to providing assistance to those in need is a testament to its strong and unwavering support for Ukraine and its people.
