Toronto police to announce 'significant' arrests made by tow truck task force

Toronto Police have announced significant arrests made by the Tow Truck Task Force, targeting illegal activities within the city’s towing industry.

According to authorities, the task force has been investigating fraudulent and criminal behavior within the towing industry since its formation in January 2020. The task force is made up of members from the Toronto Police Service, the Ontario Provincial Police, and the Ministry of Transportation.

During the investigation, the task force uncovered a network of organized crime involving tow truck companies, auto repair shops, and insurance companies. These criminal organizations were allegedly involved in staged collisions, insurance fraud, and extortion.

As a result of the investigation, 20 individuals have been arrested and charged with various offenses, including fraud, extortion, and participating in a criminal organization. The charges also include violations of the Highway Traffic Act and the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.

The arrests were made in various locations across the Greater Toronto Area, including Toronto, Mississauga, and Brampton. The accused individuals range in age from 19 to 60 years old.

Police have also seized 20 tow trucks and several luxury vehicles, including a Lamborghini and a Porsche, believed to be obtained through criminal activities.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities believe there may be more individuals involved in the criminal network. They are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist with the investigation.

The Toronto Police Service is committed to ensuring the safety and integrity of the city’s towing industry. They are working closely with other law enforcement agencies and the Ministry of Transportation to crack down on illegal activities and protect the public from these criminal organizations.

The Tow Truck Task Force will continue to monitor and investigate any suspicious activities within the towing industry to maintain the safety and trust of the community.
