British Columbia swimmer, Aurelie Rivard, has made history by winning Canada’s first Paralympic gold medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.

Rivard, who hails from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, competed in the women’s 100m freestyle S10 event and finished with a time of 57.38 seconds, setting a new Paralympic record. This is her fourth Paralympic gold medal, having previously won three at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

The 25-year-old athlete, who was born with an incomplete right hand, has been a dominant force in the pool since her Paralympic debut in 2012. She has won a total of 10 Paralympic medals, including six gold, three silver, and one bronze.

Rivard’s victory in Paris is a testament to her hard work and dedication to the sport. She has been training tirelessly for the past five years, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Her coach, Craig McCord, has been instrumental in her success, pushing her to be the best she can be.

In an interview after her race, Rivard expressed her joy and gratitude for winning Canada’s first Paralympic gold medal in Paris. She also dedicated her win to her family, friends, and supporters who have been with her every step of the way.

Rivard’s achievement is a proud moment for Canada and a source of inspiration for all athletes, especially those with disabilities. She has proven that with determination and perseverance, anything is possible.

As the Paralympic Games continue, we can expect to see more outstanding performances from Rivard and other Canadian athletes. Let us continue to cheer them on and celebrate their achievements.
