The historic Buxton Homecoming event, which celebrates the legacy of the Buxton Settlement, turned 101 this year. However, this year’s event was particularly special as a new generation took the lead in organizing and honoring the community’s rich history.
The Buxton Settlement, located in Chatham-Kent, Ontario, was established in 1849 as a refuge for African Americans fleeing slavery in the United States. It quickly became a thriving community, with schools, churches, and businesses, and was a key stop on the Underground Railroad.
The Buxton Homecoming, which began in 1920, is a time for descendants of the original settlers to come together and celebrate their heritage. This year, the event was organized by a group of young adults who are passionate about preserving and sharing the history of Buxton.
One of the organizers, 25-year-old Jasmine Johnson, spoke about the importance of passing down the stories and traditions of Buxton to future generations. “We want to make sure that the legacy of our ancestors lives on and that their sacrifices are not forgotten,” she said.
The event featured a parade, live music, and a variety of activities for all ages. Attendees also had the opportunity to visit the Buxton National Historic Site and Museum, which showcases artifacts and documents from the settlement’s early days.
