Grazing goats are making a comeback in Calgary this month, as the city continues its efforts to manage vegetation in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly way.
The goats, provided by the company “Grazing Goat Solutions,” will be returning to the city for the third year in a row. They will be grazing on a 2.5-hectare plot of land in the community of Rocky Ridge, located in the city’s northwest.
According to the city’s Parks department, the goats will be helping to control the growth of weeds and other invasive plants in the area. This method of vegetation management is not only cost-effective, but also reduces the need for herbicides and manual labor.
The goats will be supervised by a team of trained professionals and will be contained within a portable fence. The fence will be moved every few days to ensure the goats have access to fresh vegetation.
This initiative aligns with the city’s commitment to sustainable practices and reducing its carbon footprint. The goats’ natural grazing habits also help to promote biodiversity and improve soil health.
Residents in the area are encouraged to come and see the goats in action, but are reminded to keep a safe distance and not to feed or touch the animals.
The grazing goats will be in Rocky Ridge until the end of August, after which they will move to another location in the city. This year, the goats will also be making an appearance in the community of Silver Springs.
The city hopes that this initiative will continue to be a success and that the use of goats for vegetation management will become a regular practice in Calgary. With their help, the city can maintain its green spaces in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner.
