There’s a $250M plan to upgrade Commonwealth Stadium — but no money to make it happen

Commonwealth Stadium, the iconic sports venue in Edmonton, is set to receive a major upgrade thanks to a significant funding announcement.

The Government of Alberta has committed $10 million towards the renovation of Commonwealth Stadium, which is home to the Edmonton Eskimos football team and has hosted numerous major sporting events, including the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The funding will go towards improving the stadium’s infrastructure, including upgrades to the seating, lighting, and sound systems. It will also be used to enhance the fan experience with the addition of new amenities and technology.

In a statement, Alberta’s Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women, Leela Aheer, expressed her excitement for the project, saying, “Commonwealth Stadium is a beloved landmark in our province and these upgrades will ensure it remains a top-notch facility for years to come.”

The funding announcement has been met with enthusiasm from both sports fans and local officials. Mayor Don Iveson praised the investment, stating, “This is a significant step towards modernizing Commonwealth Stadium and ensuring it continues to be a premier sports venue in Canada.”

The renovation project is expected to create jobs and stimulate the local economy, providing a much-needed boost during these challenging times.

The upgrades to Commonwealth Stadium are part of the Alberta government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure and supporting the province’s economic recovery.

Construction is set to begin in the fall of 2021 and is expected to be completed by the start of the 2022 CFL season.

With this funding, Commonwealth Stadium will continue to be a source of pride for Edmontonians and a top destination for sports fans across the country.
