A tragic accident on a Quebec highway has claimed the life of a motorcyclist after colliding with a moose.
According to authorities, the collision occurred on Highway 117 near the town of Mont-Laurier on Sunday afternoon. The motorcyclist, a 45-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of motorists and wildlife on Quebec’s highways. The province has seen an increase in collisions involving moose in recent years, with an average of 600 incidents reported annually.
Sergeant Claude Denis of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) stated that the motorcyclist was unable to avoid the moose, which suddenly appeared on the road. The animal also did not survive the collision.
The SQ is reminding drivers to be cautious and alert while driving, especially in areas where wildlife is known to be present. They also urge motorists to reduce their speed and use high beams at night to increase visibility.
In addition, the SQ is working with the Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks to implement measures to reduce the number of collisions with moose, such as installing warning signs and fencing along highways.
The identity of the victim has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
This tragic accident serves as a reminder for all drivers to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions while on the road. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.
