Montreal, QC – The rich history of Jewish immigration in Montreal has been brought to life through the stunning illustrations of local artist, Sarah Lazarovic. Her latest project, “Bridging the Past and Present,” captures the struggles and triumphs of Jewish immigrants who made their way to Montreal in the early 20th century.
Lazarovic’s inspiration for the project came from her own family’s immigration story. Her great-grandparents were among the thousands of Jewish immigrants who arrived in Montreal seeking a better life. Through her art, she wanted to honor their journey and shed light on the experiences of other Jewish immigrants during that time.
The illustrations depict scenes from the bustling streets of Montreal’s Jewish quarter, known as the “Main,” to the cramped living conditions in the city’s tenement buildings. Lazarovic’s attention to detail and use of vibrant colors bring these historical moments to life, allowing viewers to step back in time and experience the struggles and joys of the Jewish immigrant community.
In addition to the physical challenges of starting a new life in a foreign country, Jewish immigrants also faced discrimination and anti-Semitism. Lazarovic’s illustrations capture these difficult moments, but also highlight the resilience and determination of the community to overcome these obstacles and thrive in their new home.
The project has received widespread praise and recognition, with many viewers expressing their emotional connection to the illustrations and their own family’s immigration stories. Lazarovic hopes that her art will serve as a bridge between the past and present, connecting younger generations to their heritage and the struggles of their ancestors.
The “Bridging the Past and Present” project is currently on display at the Museum of Jewish Montreal and will be available for viewing until September 2021. Lazarovic’s illustrations can also be found in her book, “A Bunch of Pretty Things I Did Not Buy,” which explores the relationship between consumerism and happiness.
Through her art, Sarah Lazarovic has beautifully captured the Jewish immigrant experience in Montreal, reminding us of the strength and resilience of those who came before us. Her illustrations serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving and honoring our history, and the impact it has on shaping our present and future.
