Canadian musician Jacob Hoggard, best known as the lead singer of the band Hedley, will be seeking bail today as he awaits an attempt to appeal his sexual assault conviction.
Hoggard was found guilty in March 2021 of sexually assaulting a woman in 2016. He was sentenced to six years in prison, but has since filed an appeal of his conviction.
The appeal is set to be heard on November 15, 2021, but Hoggard’s legal team is seeking bail for him until then. The bail hearing is scheduled for today at the Ontario Court of Appeal.
Hoggard’s lawyer, Ian Smith, argues that his client should be granted bail as he poses no risk to the public and has strong ties to the community. Smith also stated that Hoggard has been compliant with his bail conditions since his arrest in 2018.
The Crown, however, is opposing Hoggard’s release on bail, citing concerns about the safety of the victim and the public. The Crown also argues that Hoggard’s appeal has little chance of success.
Hoggard’s conviction and sentencing sparked a conversation about sexual assault and consent in the music industry, with many calling for greater accountability and change.
Hoggard’s bail hearing is expected to be closely watched by both his supporters and those advocating for survivors of sexual assault.
