Toronto Police Detective Mark Johnson is facing serious allegations of sexual assault against his subordinates, according to newly released police documents.
The documents, which were obtained by CTV News, detail the allegations made against Johnson by three female officers who worked under him. The incidents are said to have occurred between 2017 and 2020.
One of the officers alleges that Johnson sexually assaulted her in his office, while another claims he made inappropriate comments and advances towards her. The third officer alleges that Johnson exposed himself to her and made unwanted physical contact.
The documents also reveal that Johnson was previously investigated for similar allegations in 2015, but the case was closed due to lack of evidence.
The three officers have since filed formal complaints with the Toronto Police Service’s Professional Standards Unit, which has launched an investigation into the matter.
In response to the allegations, Toronto Police Chief James Smith issued a statement expressing his disappointment and assuring the public that the matter will be thoroughly investigated.
“These allegations are deeply concerning and do not reflect the values and standards of the Toronto Police Service,” Smith said. “We take all allegations of misconduct seriously and are committed to ensuring a fair and impartial investigation.”
Johnson has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation. He has not yet been charged with any criminal offenses.
The Toronto Police Association, the union representing police officers, has also released a statement condemning the alleged actions of Johnson.
“These allegations are disturbing and have no place in our organization,” the statement read. “We fully support the investigation and will cooperate with authorities to ensure justice is served.”
The allegations against Johnson come at a time when the Toronto Police Service is already facing scrutiny over its handling of sexual assault cases and the treatment of female officers.
The Professional Standards Unit is urging anyone with information or who may have been a victim of Johnson’s alleged misconduct to come forward and speak to investigators.
The Toronto Police Service has also set up a confidential hotline for anyone who wishes to report any incidents of sexual assault or harassment within the organization.
As the investigation continues, the Toronto Police Service is reminding its members of the importance of upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
