A Canadian warship has successfully seized a massive amount of cocaine off the coast of Central America.
According to the Royal Canadian Navy, the HMCS Calgary intercepted a suspicious vessel in international waters on December 15, 2020. After conducting a thorough search, the crew discovered and seized approximately 1,400 kilograms of cocaine.
The operation was a joint effort between the Canadian Armed Forces and the United States Coast Guard, as part of Operation CARIBBE. This mission aims to disrupt the flow of illegal drugs in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific regions.
The HMCS Calgary is currently deployed on Operation PROJECTION, which is Canada’s contribution to international efforts to combat illicit trafficking and organized crime in the Americas.
This successful seizure is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our Canadian sailors and their international partners. It also highlights the importance of ongoing collaboration and cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.
The seized cocaine has an estimated street value of $100 million, making this a significant blow to criminal organizations involved in the illegal drug trade. The drugs will be destroyed at sea.
The Royal Canadian Navy remains committed to protecting our waters and working with our allies to combat illegal activities that threaten the safety and security of our communities.
This latest operation serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat posed by drug trafficking and the importance of continued efforts to disrupt these criminal networks. The Royal Canadian Navy will continue to play a crucial role in these efforts, ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens.
