Tensions grow with Fraser Health as Surrey ER doctors cite 'toxic' workplace, 'failing their patients'

Tensions are on the rise between Fraser Health and emergency room doctors in Surrey, as the doctors speak out about a toxic workplace and their concerns for patient care.

According to a letter written by the Surrey Memorial Hospital emergency room physicians, the workplace environment has become increasingly toxic, leading to a high turnover rate and difficulty in recruiting new doctors. The letter, addressed to Fraser Health CEO Dr. Victoria Lee, states that the current situation is “unsustainable” and is “failing our patients.”

The doctors cite a lack of support from Fraser Health, including inadequate staffing and resources, as well as a lack of communication and collaboration between the health authority and the physicians. They also express concerns about the safety of patients, as well as their own well-being, in such a stressful and toxic environment.

In response, Fraser Health has acknowledged the concerns raised by the doctors and has committed to addressing them. In a statement, Dr. Lee stated that they are taking the concerns seriously and are working with the physicians to find solutions.

This is not the first time that tensions have arisen between Fraser Health and the Surrey Memorial Hospital emergency room doctors. In 2019, the doctors also spoke out about similar issues, but little has changed since then.

The current situation has sparked calls for action from the British Columbia Medical Association (BCMA). In a statement, BCMA president Dr. Matthew Chow expressed his support for the Surrey doctors and urged Fraser Health to take immediate action to address the concerns raised.

The BCMA has also called for an independent review of the workplace culture at Surrey Memorial Hospital, as well as a review of the staffing and resource allocation in the emergency department.

In the meantime, the doctors at Surrey Memorial Hospital continue to work tirelessly to provide the best possible care for their patients, despite the challenges they face. It is clear that action needs to be taken to address the concerns raised by the doctors and to ensure a safe and supportive workplace for all healthcare professionals.

As this situation continues to unfold, it is important for all parties involved to work together to find a resolution that prioritizes the well-being of both patients and healthcare workers. The health and safety of our community should always be the top priority, and it is crucial that these concerns are addressed and resolved in a timely and effective manner.
