Two individuals have been arrested in Montreal in connection to the tragic death of a teenager due to a suspected overdose of synthetic opioids.
According to the Montreal Police, the 17-year-old victim was found unresponsive in a residence in the city’s Plateau-Mont-Royal neighborhood on December 28th. Despite efforts to revive the teenager, they were pronounced dead at the scene.
After an investigation, police have arrested a 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman in connection to the death. They are facing charges of drug trafficking and possession with the intent to traffic.
Authorities believe that the victim had ingested a synthetic opioid known as fentanyl, which is known to be significantly more potent than other opioids and can be fatal in small doses. The exact cause of death will be determined by a toxicology report.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of synthetic opioids and the importance of addressing the ongoing opioid crisis. According to Health Canada, there were over 17,000 opioid-related deaths in Canada between January 2016 and June 2020.
The Montreal Police are urging the public to be cautious and to seek help if they or someone they know is struggling with substance abuse. They also encourage anyone with information about illegal drug activity to come forward and report it.
The identities of the arrested individuals have not been released, and the investigation is ongoing. The Montreal Police are working closely with the Quebec Coroner’s Office to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.
