Residents of Habitat Manitoba’s largest development have finally received the keys to their new homes, marking a significant milestone in the project’s progress.
The development, located in Winnipeg’s North End, consists of 12 single-family homes and 12 townhouses, providing affordable housing options for low-income families. The project is a joint effort between Habitat for Humanity Manitoba and the Manitoba government, with funding from the federal government’s National Housing Strategy.
The first residents to receive their keys were the Kaur family, who have been eagerly awaiting this moment for months. “We are so grateful and excited to finally have a place to call our own,” said Harpreet Kaur, the mother of the family. “This is a dream come true for us.”
The Kaur family, along with the other families who will be moving into the development, have gone through a rigorous application process and have completed 500 hours of sweat equity, working alongside volunteers to help build their own homes. This is a key aspect of Habitat for Humanity’s model, as it not only provides affordable housing but also empowers families to become homeowners and invest in their community.
The homes in this development are energy-efficient and built to meet the needs of the families who will be living in them. Each home has three or four bedrooms, a full basement, and a backyard, providing ample space for families to grow and thrive.
“This project is a testament to the power of collaboration and community,” said Sandy Hopkins, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Manitoba. “We are grateful for the support of our partners and volunteers who have helped make this dream a reality for these families.”
The Habitat Manitoba development is just one of many initiatives aimed at addressing the affordable housing crisis in Manitoba. According to a report by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, Manitoba has the second-highest rate of housing insecurity in the country, with 1 in 5 households spending more than 30% of their income on housing.
The Manitoba government has committed to investing $3.5 million in this project, as part of their commitment to creating more affordable housing options for low-income families. “We are proud to be a part of this project and to see the positive impact it will have on these families and the community,” said Rochelle Squires, Minister of Families.
As the first residents settle into their new homes, it is a reminder of the importance of affordable housing and the difference it can make in the lives of families. With the completion of this development, Habitat for Humanity Manitoba and its partners are one step closer to their goal of providing safe and decent housing for all.
