An Airdrie man is celebrating a life-changing win after claiming a $1 million prize from the Lotto 6/49 draw.
The lucky winner, who has chosen to remain anonymous, purchased the winning ticket at the Airdrie Co-op on Main Street. He discovered his win while checking his numbers online and was in disbelief when he saw the matching numbers.
“I couldn’t believe it. I had to check the numbers multiple times to make sure I wasn’t seeing things,” he said.
The man, who has been playing the lottery for years, says he has always dreamed of winning big but never thought it would actually happen.
“It’s a really nice surprise. I never thought I would be a millionaire,” he said.
The winner plans to use his newfound fortune to pay off his mortgage and invest in his children’s education. He also hopes to take a trip to Europe with his family once it is safe to travel again.
The Airdrie Co-op will also receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
The Lotto 6/49 draw takes place every Wednesday and Saturday, with a guaranteed $1 million prize for the winner of the Guaranteed Prize Draw. The odds of winning the $1 million prize are 1 in 13,983,816.
This is not the first time a resident of Airdrie has won big in the lottery. In 2019, a couple from the city won $8.1 million in the Lotto 6/49 draw.
The Western Canada Lottery Corporation reminds players to play responsibly and to always sign the back of their tickets.
