Calgary E-Scooter Injuries Prompt Experts to Urge Rider Caution

The rise in popularity of electric scooters in Calgary has led to an increase in injuries, prompting experts to emphasize the importance of rider caution.

According to data from Alberta Health Services, there were 60 reported injuries related to e-scooters in Calgary between July and September of 2021. This is a significant increase from the same time period in 2020, where there were only 12 reported injuries.

Experts are concerned about the spike in injuries and are urging riders to take precautions to ensure their safety. Dr. Michael Cusimano, a neurosurgeon at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, says that e-scooters can be dangerous if not used properly.

“Riders need to be aware of their surroundings and follow traffic laws,” says Dr. Cusimano. “They should also wear a helmet and avoid riding under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

In addition to rider behavior, experts also point to the design of e-scooters as a contributing factor to injuries. The small wheels and lack of suspension make them more susceptible to bumps and cracks on the road, which can cause riders to lose control and fall.

Some cities have implemented regulations to address the safety concerns surrounding e-scooters. In Calgary, riders are required to be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license. They are also required to wear a helmet and follow traffic laws.

However, experts say that more needs to be done to ensure the safety of riders. Dr. Cusimano suggests implementing speed limits and designated areas for e-scooter use to reduce the risk of collisions with pedestrians and other vehicles.

In the meantime, riders are urged to take caution and be responsible when using e-scooters. As the popularity of these devices continues to grow, it is important for both riders and city officials to prioritize safety to prevent further injuries.
