PQ consolidates its lead over CAQ, new poll suggests

According to a recent poll, the Parti Québécois (PQ) has solidified its position as the leading political party in Quebec, surpassing the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ).

The poll, conducted by Léger for the Journal de Montréal and Le Devoir, shows that the PQ currently holds 33% of voter support, while the CAQ trails behind at 28%. This marks a significant increase for the PQ, who previously held a narrow lead of 1% over the CAQ in a similar poll conducted in October.

The poll also reveals that the Liberal Party of Quebec (PLQ) has seen a slight decrease in support, dropping from 25% to 23%. Meanwhile, the left-leaning Québec Solidaire (QS) has maintained its position at 11%.

The results of this poll come as a surprise to many, as the CAQ has been in power since 2018 and has been widely considered the front-runner in the upcoming provincial election. However, the PQ’s recent surge in popularity can be attributed to their strong stance on issues such as language and identity, which have resonated with Quebec voters.

The CAQ, on the other hand, has faced criticism for their handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and their controversial secularism law, Bill 21. These factors may have contributed to their decline in support among voters.

It is important to note that this poll was conducted before the recent announcement of a potential snap election by Premier François Legault. This development could potentially shift the political landscape once again and impact the results of future polls.

The Léger poll was conducted between December 7th and 10th, with a sample size of 1,000 Quebec residents. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.1%, 19 times out of 20.

As the provincial election draws closer, it will be interesting to see how these poll results translate into votes and ultimately shape the future of Quebec’s political landscape.
