Standing hearing scheduled for inquest into police shooting death

A standing hearing has been scheduled for the inquest into the police shooting death of a man in Winnipeg.

The inquest, which will be held virtually, is set to begin on January 25, 2022. It will examine the circumstances surrounding the death of the man, who was fatally shot by police on April 8, 2021.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was shot by police during a confrontation in the city’s North End. He was taken to hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba, which investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in the province, has been looking into the shooting. The IIU has completed its investigation and has forwarded its report to the Manitoba Prosecution Service for review.

The inquest will provide an opportunity for the public to hear evidence and testimony from witnesses, including police officers involved in the incident. It will also allow for a thorough examination of the events leading up to the shooting and the actions taken by police.

The purpose of the inquest is not to determine legal responsibility, but rather to provide recommendations for preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future. The presiding judge will have the authority to make recommendations to improve police practices and procedures.

The inquest will be open to the public and media, with the exception of certain portions that may be deemed sensitive or confidential. The family of the deceased man will also have the opportunity to participate in the proceedings.

The standing hearing, which will take place on November 15, 2021, will determine the scope of the inquest and the witnesses who will be called to testify. It will also provide an opportunity for interested parties to make submissions on the scope of the inquest.

The inquest is an important step in providing transparency and accountability in cases involving police use of force. It is crucial that the public has a clear understanding of the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

We will continue to provide updates on the inquest as more information becomes available.
