Vehicle thefts down by more than 30 per cent in York Region but carjackings are up: police

According to recent statistics released by York Regional Police, vehicle thefts in the region have decreased by more than 30 per cent. However, the same report also revealed a concerning increase in carjackings.

The data, which covers the period from January to October of this year, shows a significant drop in vehicle thefts compared to the same time frame in 2020. In 2021, there were 1,100 reported cases of vehicle theft, while in 2020, there were 1,600.

This decrease can be attributed to various factors, including increased police presence and awareness campaigns aimed at preventing vehicle theft. York Regional Police have also been working closely with other law enforcement agencies to target organized crime groups involved in vehicle theft.

Despite this positive trend, the report also highlights a worrying increase in carjackings. In 2021, there were 27 reported cases of carjackings, compared to only 17 in 2020. This represents a 59 per cent increase, which is a cause for concern for both the police and the community.

York Regional Police are urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their vehicles. This includes locking car doors, keeping valuables out of sight, and avoiding leaving keys in the ignition.

In addition, the police are reminding the public to report any suspicious activity or individuals to the authorities immediately. They also encourage victims of carjackings to cooperate with the perpetrators and not put themselves in harm’s way.

The police are committed to addressing this issue and are working diligently to identify and apprehend those responsible for these crimes. They are also reminding the public that carjacking is a serious offence and can result in severe penalties.

In conclusion, while the decrease in vehicle thefts is a positive development, the increase in carjackings is a cause for concern. The police are urging the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent becoming a victim of these crimes.
