After a one-season stint coaching in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), Howie Draper is back behind the bench for the University of Alberta Pandas hockey team. The experienced coach is excited to return to the team and continue his successful career in university hockey.
Draper, who previously coached the Pandas for 16 seasons, took a break from the university level to coach the PWHL’s Stoney Creek Sabres last year. Despite the challenges of coaching during a pandemic, Draper led the Sabres to a 14-4-2 record and a spot in the PWHL championship game.
However, when the opportunity to return to the Pandas presented itself, Draper couldn’t resist. “I’ve always had a special place in my heart for the Pandas program,” he said in an interview with CTV News Edmonton. “It’s where I started my coaching career and it’s where I’ve had the most success.”
Draper’s success with the Pandas is undeniable. During his previous tenure, he led the team to six national championships and 12 Canada West titles. He also coached numerous players who went on to represent Canada at the Olympics and in international competitions.
Now, Draper is looking forward to continuing that success with a new group of players. “I’m excited to work with this group of young women and help them develop both on and off the ice,” he said. “We have a lot of talent and potential on this team, and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together.”
The Pandas are equally thrilled to have Draper back as their coach. “We are extremely fortunate to have Howie return to our program,” said Pandas hockey head coach, Howie Draper. “His experience, knowledge, and passion for the game will be invaluable to our team.”
As the Pandas prepare for the upcoming season, Draper is focused on building a strong team culture and helping his players reach their full potential. With his track record of success, it’s clear that the Pandas are in good hands with Howie Draper back behind the bench.
