Chatham Man Honoured for Military Service in Afghanistan
A Chatham man was recently recognized for his bravery and dedication to serving his country in Afghanistan. Sergeant John Smith, a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, was awarded the Medal of Bravery for his actions during his deployment in Afghanistan.
Smith, who has been in the military for over 15 years, was deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 as part of the NATO-led mission to support the Afghan government and its people. During his time there, he was involved in several dangerous missions, including a firefight with Taliban insurgents.
According to his commanding officer, Smith showed exceptional courage and leadership during the firefight, which resulted in the successful extraction of his team and the elimination of several enemy combatants. In a ceremony held at the Canadian Forces Base in Petawawa, he was presented with the Medal of Bravery by the Governor General of Canada, Julie Payette. In addition to the Medal of Bravery, Smith was also awarded the General Campaign Star for his service in Afghanistan. This star is given to members of the Canadian Armed Forces who have served in a designated theatre of operations for a specific period of time.
Smith humbly accepted the awards, stating that he was just doing his job and that he was proud to serve his country. He also expressed his gratitude to his fellow soldiers and the Canadian Armed Forces for their support and camaraderie during his deployment.
