'They call me a bit of a miracle': Calgary student wins $5K Brain Tumour Foundation scholarship

Calgary, AB – A local student has been awarded a prestigious scholarship from the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, proving that hard work and determination can truly pay off.

At just 17 years old, Emily Smith has already faced more challenges than most people her age. Diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of 14, she underwent surgery and radiation treatment, all while continuing her studies at Bishop Carroll High School.

Despite the obstacles, Smith maintained a positive attitude and excelled in her academics, earning a spot on the honour roll every year. Her hard work and perseverance caught the attention of the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, who awarded her with a $5,000 scholarship.

“They call me a bit of a miracle,” Smith said in an interview with CTV News. “I’m just really grateful for the opportunity to be able to share my story and hopefully inspire others.”

The scholarship, which is open to students across Canada who have been affected by a brain tumour, recognizes academic excellence, community involvement, and perseverance in the face of adversity. Smith’s determination and resilience made her a clear choice for the award.

“Emily’s story is truly inspiring,” said Susan Marshall, CEO of the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada. “Despite facing a life-threatening illness, she has continued to excel in her studies and give back to her community. We are proud to support her in her academic journey.”

Smith plans to use the scholarship to pursue a degree in neuroscience at the University of Calgary, with the goal of one day becoming a neurosurgeon. She hopes to use her own experience to help others facing similar challenges.

“I want to be able to give back and help people who are going through what I went through,” Smith said. “I know how hard it can be, but I also know that with determination and support, anything is possible.”

Smith’s story serves as a reminder that no obstacle is too great to overcome, and that with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible. The Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada’s scholarship program continues to support and recognize the achievements of young Canadians like Smith, who are making a difference in their communities despite facing adversity.
