Winnipeg’s Palestinian and Jewish communities came together to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the October 7th attack, which left two people injured and caused significant damage to a local synagogue.
The event, organized by the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg and the Palestinian Canadian Congress, aimed to promote unity and solidarity between the two communities in the face of hate and violence.
Attendees gathered at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, where the attack took place, to hear speeches from community leaders and survivors of the attack. Rabbi Anibal Mass, who was injured in the attack, spoke about the importance of standing together against hate and intolerance.
“We must continue to work towards building bridges and promoting understanding between different communities,” said Rabbi Mass.
The event also featured a performance by Palestinian-Canadian musician, Fadi Ennab, who played a song he wrote in response to the attack. The song, titled “One Heart, One Soul,” emphasizes the need for unity and peace between all people.
In addition to the commemoration, the event also served as a fundraiser for the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, which suffered extensive damage during the attack. The funds raised will go towards repairing the building and enhancing security measures.
Both the Jewish and Palestinian communities expressed their gratitude for the support and solidarity shown by each other during this difficult time. They also emphasized the importance of continuing to work together towards a more peaceful and inclusive society.
The October 7th attack was a tragic reminder of the ongoing need for unity and understanding between different communities. As we mark the one-year anniversary, let us remember the victims and stand together against hate and violence.
