Halifax Police Chief Don MacLean Sworn In

After a rigorous selection process, Don MacLean has officially been sworn in as the new Chief of Police for Halifax. The ceremony took place on Monday at Halifax City Hall, where MacLean took the oath of office in front of a crowd of dignitaries, colleagues, and community members.

MacLean, who has over 30 years of experience in law enforcement, was chosen as the top candidate by the Halifax Regional Municipality’s Board of Police Commissioners. He replaces former Chief Dan Kinsella, who retired in December after serving for two years.

During the ceremony, Mayor Mike Savage praised MacLean’s extensive experience and leadership skills, stating that he is confident in his ability to lead the Halifax Regional Police (HRP) and work collaboratively with the community.

MacLean, who previously served as the Deputy Chief of Operations for the HRP, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Chief and his commitment to upholding the values of the HRP, including integrity, respect, and accountability.

In his speech, MacLean also acknowledged the challenges facing the police force, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the need for continued efforts towards diversity and inclusion within the HRP.

The ceremony also included a moment of silence to honor the lives lost to police brutality and systemic racism, as well as a performance by the HRP’s Pipes and Drums band.

MacLean’s appointment as Chief of Police comes at a critical time for the HRP, as they work towards rebuilding trust with the community and addressing issues of systemic racism and discrimination within the force.

With his extensive experience and dedication to serving the community, MacLean is poised to lead the HRP towards a more inclusive and accountable future.
