Families of young people who are on a recovery journey get support in Kelowna with new program

Kelowna, BC – Families of young individuals who are on a journey towards recovery now have access to a new program in Kelowna that offers support and guidance. The program, called “Families Matter”, aims to provide resources and assistance to families who have loved ones struggling with addiction or mental health issues.

The program is a collaboration between the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and the Bridge Youth & Family Services Society. It was created in response to the growing need for support for families who are often overlooked in the recovery process.

According to the CMHA, families play a crucial role in the recovery journey of their loved ones. However, they often face challenges and difficulties in navigating the complex mental health and addiction systems. This can lead to feelings of isolation, guilt, and frustration.

“Families Matter” aims to address these challenges by providing a safe and supportive space for families to connect with others who are going through similar experiences. The program offers a variety of services, including support groups, educational workshops, and one-on-one counselling.

One of the key components of the program is the “Family Support Group”, which provides a space for families to share their experiences, learn from each other, and receive guidance from trained facilitators. The group also offers practical tools and strategies for coping with the challenges of supporting a loved one in recovery.

In addition to the support group, “Families Matter” also offers educational workshops on topics such as communication, self-care, and understanding mental health and addiction. These workshops aim to equip families with the knowledge and skills they need to better support their loved ones.

The program also offers one-on-one counselling for families who may need more personalized support. This can include individual counselling sessions, family therapy, and referrals to other community resources.

The launch of “Families Matter” has been met with positive feedback from families in the community. Many have expressed gratitude for the program, stating that it has provided them with a sense of community and support during a difficult time.

The CMHA and the Bridge Youth & Family Services Society are committed to continuing to expand and improve the program to meet the needs of families in Kelowna. They hope that “Families Matter” will not only support families in their journey towards recovery but also reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and addiction.

If you or someone you know is in need of support, please visit the CMHA or Bridge Youth & Family Services Society websites for more information on the “Families Matter” program. Remember, you are not alone, and your family matters.
