Two men have been charged with murder in connection to a fatal fire that occurred in Old Montreal last week.
According to Montreal police, the fire broke out in a residential building on Saint-Pierre Street in the early hours of December 15. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames, but not before discovering the body of a 50-year-old man inside the building.
After an investigation, police arrested two suspects, 27-year-old Jean-Pierre Tremblay and 29-year-old Marc-Antoine Gagnon, on December 17. Both men have been charged with first-degree murder and arson causing death.
The victim has been identified as Jean-Luc Tremblay, who was known to the suspects. Police have not released any information on the motive for the crime.
The two accused appeared in court on December 18 and were remanded into custody. They are scheduled to appear in court again on January 5.
This is not the first time that Jean-Pierre Tremblay has been in trouble with the law. He has a criminal record dating back to 2013, including convictions for assault, theft, and drug possession.
The fire has left the residents of the building devastated, with many losing their homes and belongings. The Red Cross has been providing assistance to those affected.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are asking anyone with information to come forward. They can contact the Major Crimes Unit at 514-393-1133 or call 911.
The Montreal police have expressed their condolences to the victim’s family and friends and are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.
