A house fire broke out in the Waverley Heights neighborhood of Winnipeg on Tuesday evening, caused by unattended cooking.
According to the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS), they received a call at around 6:30 p.m. about a fire in a single-family home on Waverley Street. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from the kitchen area.
The homeowner, who was the only occupant at the time, had left the stove unattended while cooking. The fire quickly spread to the cabinets and surrounding areas, causing significant damage to the kitchen and smoke damage throughout the house.
Fortunately, the homeowner was able to escape the house safely and no injuries were reported. However, the WFPS reminds the public to never leave cooking unattended as it can lead to devastating consequences.
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to neighboring homes. The WFPS also conducted a thorough search of the house to ensure no one else was inside.
The WFPS is urging all residents to have working smoke alarms on every level of their homes and to have a fire escape plan in place. They also advise against using the stove or oven as a source of heat during the winter months.
The estimated damage to the house is currently unknown, but the WFPS is reminding homeowners to regularly check their smoke alarms and have a fire extinguisher on hand in case of emergencies.
The WFPS is also reminding the public to always stay vigilant and cautious when it comes to fire safety, as it can save lives and prevent property damage.
