Winnipeg MP Dan Vandal has announced that he will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming federal election.
In a statement released on Monday, Vandal cited personal reasons for his decision to step down from his role as the Member of Parliament for Saint Boniface-Saint Vital.
“I have been honoured to serve the people of Saint Boniface-Saint Vital for the past six years, but after much reflection and discussion with my family, I have decided not to seek re-election in the upcoming federal election,” Vandal said.
Vandal, who was first elected in 2015, has been a strong advocate for his community and has held various roles within the Liberal government, including Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Indigenous Services and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Northern Affairs.
During his time in office, Vandal has been a vocal supporter of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and has worked towards improving the lives of those living in Northern communities.
In his statement, Vandal expressed his gratitude to his constituents and colleagues for their support and collaboration over the years.
“I am proud of the work we have accomplished together, and I am confident that the next Member of Parliament for Saint Boniface-Saint Vital will continue to build on our progress,” Vandal said.
The news of Vandal’s decision not to seek re-election has sparked speculation about potential candidates for the Liberal nomination in the riding. However, Vandal has not yet endorsed any specific candidate.
The federal election is expected to take place later this year, and Vandal’s departure from politics will leave a vacancy in the Liberal Party’s roster of experienced MPs.
As the news of Vandal’s decision spreads, many are expressing their gratitude for his service and wishing him well in his future endeavors.
