St. Lawrence College has taken a significant step towards reconciliation by creating a dedicated space for Indigenous students on its campus.
The new space, called the “Indigenous Gathering Place,” was officially opened on Wednesday with a traditional smudging ceremony and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The space is located in the Student Association building and is open to all Indigenous students, staff, and faculty at the college.
The idea for the Indigenous Gathering Place came from the college’s Indigenous Student Council, who saw a need for a safe and welcoming space for Indigenous students to gather, study, and connect with their culture. The council worked closely with the college’s administration to make this vision a reality.
The space is equipped with comfortable seating, a kitchenette, and a computer station. It also features artwork and traditional teachings from local Indigenous communities, providing a sense of cultural identity and pride for students.
According to St. Lawrence College President and CEO Glenn Vollebregt, the Indigenous Gathering Place is an important step towards reconciliation and creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for Indigenous students.
“We are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all of our students, and the Indigenous Gathering Place is a tangible representation of that commitment,” said Vollebregt.
The college has also hired an Indigenous Student Advisor, who will be available to provide support and guidance to Indigenous students and help them navigate their academic journey.
The opening of the Indigenous Gathering Place aligns with the college’s Indigenous Education Protocol, which outlines its commitment to incorporating Indigenous perspectives and knowledge into its curriculum and creating a welcoming environment for Indigenous students.
The college’s efforts towards reconciliation have not gone unnoticed. In 2019, St. Lawrence College was awarded the Gold Indigenous Education Excellence Award by Colleges and Institutes Canada for its commitment to Indigenous education and reconciliation.
The Indigenous Gathering Place is a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for Indigenous students at St. Lawrence College. It is a testament to the college’s dedication to reconciliation and its commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive campus for all students.
