Motorists in Edmonton are being advised to expect delays as a demonstration makes its way from downtown to Whyte Avenue.
The protest, organized by a group called “Citizens for Change,” is expected to begin at 2 p.m. at Churchill Square and continue along Jasper Avenue before turning onto Whyte Avenue.
According to the group’s Facebook page, the demonstration is in support of various social and political causes, including climate change, Indigenous rights, and affordable housing.
The Edmonton Police Service has stated that they will be monitoring the protest and ensuring the safety of all involved. However, they are also warning drivers to plan alternate routes and expect delays in the affected areas.
This is not the first time that Citizens for Change has organized a demonstration in Edmonton. In September, a similar protest caused significant traffic disruptions in the downtown area.
The group has stated that they are committed to peaceful and non-violent demonstrations, and are urging participants to adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols, such as wearing masks and maintaining physical distancing.
As of now, it is unclear how long the demonstration will last and what specific routes it will take. However, motorists are advised to avoid the affected areas if possible and to stay updated on any developments through local news outlets and social media.
This demonstration serves as a reminder of the importance of exercising our right to peaceful protest, while also being considerate of the impact it may have on others. As always, safety should be the top priority for all involved.
