A family in Burnaby is speaking out after their teenage daughter was allegedly abandoned by an Uber driver in a parking lot.
According to the family, the 16-year-old girl had requested an Uber ride on Saturday night to take her home from a friend’s house. However, when the driver arrived, he reportedly refused to take her to her destination and instead dropped her off in a parking lot in Burnaby.
The girl’s mother, who wishes to remain anonymous, told CTV News that her daughter was left alone in the dark and had to walk home for over an hour. She also expressed concern for her daughter’s safety, as she was left in an unfamiliar area late at night.
The family has since filed a complaint with Uber and the Burnaby RCMP. They are also urging other parents to be cautious when using ride-sharing services for their children.
In a statement to CTV News, Uber said they are investigating the incident and have suspended the driver’s account pending the outcome of the investigation. They also stated that the safety of their riders is their top priority and they have strict policies in place to ensure the well-being of their passengers.
This incident has raised concerns about the safety of ride-sharing services, especially for minors. Parents are reminded to always supervise their children’s use of these services and to report any concerning incidents to the authorities.
The Burnaby RCMP is also reminding the public to be cautious when using ride-sharing services and to always ensure they are getting into the correct vehicle with a verified driver.
As for the teenage girl, she is said to be shaken by the incident but physically unharmed. The family is hoping for a swift resolution to the investigation and for measures to be put in place to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
