Yonge Street in Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood was forced to close after a water main break on Monday morning.
The incident occurred at around 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of Yonge Street and Scollard Street, causing significant damage to the road and surrounding area.
According to Toronto Water, the break was caused by a contractor who was working in the area. The contractor accidentally hit the water main while conducting construction work.
As a result, water was seen gushing out onto the street, causing a large sinkhole to form. The water was quickly shut off, but not before it flooded the area and caused damage to nearby buildings.
The Toronto Police Service and Toronto Fire Services were both on the scene to assist with the situation. The area was immediately closed off to traffic and pedestrians for safety reasons.
City officials are urging residents and commuters to avoid the area until further notice. The closure is expected to last for several hours as crews work to repair the damage and clean up the area.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as a result of the water main break. However, the incident has caused significant disruption to the neighbourhood and surrounding businesses.
This is not the first time that a water main break has occurred in Toronto. In fact, according to Toronto Water, there have been over 1,000 water main breaks in the city this year alone.
City officials are reminding residents to be cautious when conducting any type of construction work near water mains to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
As the situation continues to unfold, updates will be provided to the public. In the meantime, commuters are advised to find alternate routes and to expect delays in the area.
The safety and well-being of residents and visitors is of utmost importance, and city officials are working diligently to resolve the issue as quickly and efficiently as possible.
