Edmonton, AB – As the holiday season approaches, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has launched their annual campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving. However, recent statistics from the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) have revealed a concerning trend – an average of four impaired drivers are being caught every day in the city.
According to EPS, there have been 1,200 impaired driving charges laid in Edmonton since the beginning of the year. This number is simply unacceptable and highlights the need for continued efforts to combat this dangerous behavior.
MADD’s holiday campaign, titled “Project Red Ribbon”, aims to remind people to plan ahead for a safe ride home if they plan on consuming alcohol. The campaign also serves as a tribute to those who have lost their lives or have been injured due to impaired driving.
In a statement, MADD’s National President Jaymie-Lyne Hancock emphasized the importance of taking responsibility for one’s actions and making the right choices. “We all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe. It’s simply not worth the risk to get behind the wheel while impaired,” she said.
The EPS also stressed the severity of impaired driving, stating that it is one of the leading causes of death and injury on Canadian roads. They urge the public to report any suspected impaired drivers and to always have a designated driver or use alternative transportation if planning on drinking.
As the holiday season approaches, it is crucial for everyone to remember the devastating consequences of impaired driving. Let us all do our part in keeping our roads safe and make responsible choices to prevent any more tragedies from occurring.
