The Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) government has announced a new measure that requires newly graduated doctors to first practice in the public healthcare system before moving on to private practice.
According to Health Minister Christian Dubé, this measure aims to address the shortage of doctors in the public system and ensure that all Quebecers have access to quality healthcare.
Under this new rule, doctors who have completed their residency training will have to work in the public system for a minimum of two years before being allowed to open their own private practice. This applies to all medical specialties, including family medicine, surgery, and pediatrics.
The CAQ government believes that this measure will not only increase the number of doctors in the public system, but also improve the quality of care for patients. Dubé stated that this will also help reduce wait times for medical appointments and procedures.
However, some critics argue that this measure may discourage new doctors from staying in Quebec, as they may choose to practice in other provinces or countries where they have more freedom to open their own private practice.
In response, Dubé assured that the government will work with medical schools to ensure that students are aware of this new requirement before they begin their studies. He also stated that the government will provide support and incentives for doctors who choose to stay and work in the public system.
This new measure will come into effect in July 2022, giving current medical students and residents enough time to plan their future career paths.
The CAQ government hopes that this measure will help address the ongoing issue of doctor shortages in the public system and improve access to healthcare for all Quebecers.
