‘Very worried’: Alberta NDP concerned about gender policy impact

The Alberta NDP party has expressed deep concern over the potential impact of the provincial government’s new gender policy. According to NDP leader Rachel Notley, the policy could have serious consequences for the LGBTQ+ community and women’s rights.

Notley stated that the NDP is “very worried” about the policy, which was recently announced by the United Conservative Party (UCP) government. The policy, titled “Guidelines for Best Practices: Creating Learning Environments that Respect Diverse Sexual Orientations, Gender Identities and Gender Expressions,” aims to provide guidance for schools on how to support students who identify as LGBTQ+.

However, the NDP believes that the policy falls short in protecting the rights of LGBTQ+ students and could potentially harm them. Notley pointed out that the policy does not explicitly mention gender identity or expression, and it also allows for schools to opt out of implementing the guidelines.

The NDP is also concerned about the potential impact on women’s rights. Notley stated that the policy could lead to the erasure of women’s rights and protections, as it does not address the issue of gender-based violence and discrimination.

The UCP government has defended the policy, stating that it is meant to provide schools with flexibility in addressing the needs of LGBTQ+ students. Education Minister Adriana LaGrange also stated that the policy is in line with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

However, the NDP is calling for the government to reconsider the policy and make necessary changes to ensure the protection of LGBTQ+ rights and women’s rights. Notley emphasized the importance of creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

The NDP’s concerns have also been echoed by LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, who have called for a more comprehensive and inclusive policy. They argue that the current policy does not go far enough in addressing the needs of LGBTQ+ students and could potentially lead to discrimination and harm.

The UCP government has yet to respond to the NDP’s concerns, but the issue is likely to continue to be a point of contention in the coming weeks. As the policy is set to be implemented in schools across Alberta, it remains to be seen how it will impact the LGBTQ+ community and women’s rights.
