Brantford Mayor’s Budget Proposes 5.74% Property Tax Increase
Brantford residents may see a 5.74% increase in their property taxes next year, according to the proposed budget put forth by Mayor Kevin Davis.
The budget, which was presented to city council on Monday, outlines a total operating budget of $166.5 million for 2022. This represents a 3.5% increase from the previous year’s budget.
The proposed property tax increase is expected to generate an additional $3.5 million in revenue for the city. This increase is necessary, according to Mayor Davis, in order to maintain and improve city services and infrastructure.
The mayor acknowledged that the proposed increase may be a burden for some residents, but emphasized the importance of investing in the city’s future.
“We understand that any increase in taxes can be difficult for some residents, but we must balance the needs of our community with the financial realities of running a city,” said Mayor Davis.
The proposed budget also includes a number of capital projects, including road and sidewalk repairs, park improvements, and upgrades to the city’s water and wastewater systems.
In addition to the property tax increase, the budget also includes a 2% increase in water and wastewater rates, as well as a 2% increase in stormwater rates.
City council will now review the proposed budget and make any necessary changes before it is finalized and approved in December.
Residents are encouraged to provide feedback on the budget through a series of public meetings and online surveys.
If approved, the property tax increase will take effect in January 2022.
