Tragedy struck at a construction site in Barrhaven yesterday, as a worker fell to his death while on the job. The incident occurred at a residential construction site on Longfields Drive, where the worker was reportedly working on the roof of a townhouse.
According to Ottawa police, the worker, whose identity has not been released, fell from a height of approximately 20 feet. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 11:30 am, but unfortunately, the worker was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Ministry of Labour has been notified and is currently investigating the incident. They have confirmed that the worker was not wearing a safety harness at the time of the fall, and are looking into whether proper safety protocols were followed on the site.
The construction company responsible for the site, Mattamy Homes, has released a statement expressing their condolences to the worker’s family and friends. They have also stated that they are cooperating fully with the Ministry of Labour’s investigation and are conducting their own internal review of safety procedures.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that construction workers face on a daily basis. According to the Ministry of Labour, falls are the leading cause of death in the construction industry, accounting for 42% of all fatalities.
The construction site has been shut down for the time being, and work will not resume until the Ministry of Labour has completed their investigation and deemed it safe to do so.
